Deciding to Have Sex

  • Deciding to Have Sex

Having sex, and who you decide to have sex with, is a big deal. While you likely know some of the risks of sex like potential pregnancy and STDs (read about those here and here) there are also emotional consequences.

While it may seem like everyone is having sex, less than half (47%) of all high school students have actually had sex. People exaggerate their experience all the time. Don’t decide to have sex just because everyone else is doing it because that’s simply not true. Make the decision for yourself.

The first time you have sex is often referred to as “losing your virginity”. While this is just a term, the first time you have sex may be difficult physically and emotionally. For some people “losing your virginity” can mean engaging in oral sex, but traditionally it means having intercourse. If you are going to have sex, it’s important you know how to do it safely. • Talking to Your Parents

You know who might be really helpful in helping with your decision to have sex? Your parents! While the thought of talking to your parents about sex might completely freak you out, remember they have lived much longer than you have. They have valuable experiences that they’ve learned from and can pass on to you and know all about sex. They can also be helpful in making sure you’re safe if you are having sex without having to sneak around. If you’re considering speaking to your parents about sex in any context, about you or even a friend, check out these links for tips.

If you are going to have sex, make sure you are safe! Nothing can ruin sex more than ending up with an STI or a baby. Read up here on different types of birth control to make sure you are protecting against both pregnancy and STIs. Make the birth control choice that is best for you and your partner.
